Waste Water and Sewerage

Project: Greater Colombo Wastewater Management Project- Design Supervision and Management Consultant (DSC)

Donor: CEYNOR

Client: CEYNOR

EML provides technical expertise in engineering and was responsible for the environmental and social aspects of this project.
The project is to rehabilitate the entire existing Colombo Municipal Sewerage System, including adjoining areas. The project includes (i) Rehabilitation of sea outfalls (ii) Construction of 4 new pumping stations and upgrading of 7 existing pumping stations (iii) Rehabilitation of existing main sewers (iv) Increasing capacity of gravity mains (v) Storm water network and connection to sewer net work (vi) Preliminary design for future expansion of un-sewered areas, and ( vii) Planning for secondary treatment and preliminary designs for treatment plant.

Project: Ratmalana – Moratuwa/Jaela – Ekala Sewerage and Waste Water Project.

Donor: Swedish International Development Agency ( SIDA)

Client: National Water Supply and Drainage Board/Colombo Municipal Council

The project is to design and construct a sewer system for collection of the industrial and domestic waste-waters, including sewer pipes and pumping stations, a biological waste water treatment plants, and sea outfalls into ocean. The project area covers Ratmalana- Moratuwa in South of Colombo and Ja ela-Ekala in the North of Colombo. EML provides technical expertise in engineering and also is responsible for environmental and social safeguards .

Project: Deduru Oya Water Supply Project – Feasibility Study

Donor: National Water Supply and Drainage Board

Client: EXIM Bank of Korea

The Deduru Oya Water Supply Project is initiated partly as a remedy for the Chronic Kidney Disease ( CKD) which is highly prevail in the area that to be served under the project. It is believed the decease is caused by the usage of water from dug wells. This proposed water supply project will include a 16,500 m3/day Intake structure and Ground reservoir, a Treatment Plant – 16,000 m3/day, elevated towers, ground sumps, and transmission and distribution mains of approx. 350 km. EML provided technical expertise in the investigations, conceptual designs of main components, and had been responsible for all environmental and social aspects.

Project: Greater Matale Water Supply Project –Feasibility Study

Donor: National Water Supply and Drainage Board

Client: EXIM Bank of Korea

The Greater Matale Water Supply’s main components include several intake structures, WTPs (totaling 75,000 cu.m/day ), ground and overhead tanks, and approximately 300 km of transmission and distribution mains. EML provided technical expertise in the investigations and conceptual designs of the main components and was responsible for all environmental and social aspects.

Project: Lippekelle Water Supply Project

Donor: World Vision Lanka

Client: World Vision Lanka

The Lippekele Estate, situated in the Nuwara Eliya District, is a tea plantation of proximately 180 ha, managed by a regional plantation company. The worker population in the estate is approx 800 consisting of 195 families settled in line clusters within the estate.
The Project is to address a long felt need of a proper hygienic water supply. EML conducted hydrological investigations, community consultations, analysis of environmental and social concerns and finally, preparation of detailed engineering report including drawings and cost estimates.

Project: National Irrigation Rehabilitation Project Aftercare Programme

Donor: Ministry of Irrigation and Power, Irrigation Department, Sri Lanka

Client: World Bank

Implementation of an institutional and farmer training programs in the regions, follow up action on operation and maintenance of irrigation system by FOs; continuation of the on-going rehabilitation program in selected major /medium and minor irrigation schemes; development of a practical field manual to establish joint (agency/farmer) systems management in major /medium irrigation schemes; establishment of an institution for improved operation and maintenance support to farmers. Designing and implementing Monitoring Programme for evaluating the benefits and impacts of the project and the effectiveness of the Aftercare Programme inputs.

Project: Rehabilitation of Minor Irrigation Schemes Under Re-Awakening Project in Batticaloa District

Donor: Ministry of Economic Development, Sri Lanka

Client: Govt. of Sri Lanka

The project supports Rehabilitation of cluster of minor irrigation schemes identified in the selected districts with assistance of Department of Agrarian Development. 51 minor tanks had been identified for rehabilitation under the project. EML’s scope of services included: investigations, detailed designs, cost estimates and tender documentation and construction supervision.

Project: Preparation of a Physical Plan for the Coastal Areas of Eastern Province

Donor: Municipal Council, Batticaloa

Client: Govt. of Sri Lanka

The assignment is to prepare a Master plan for managing storm water in the Iruthayapuram area in Batticaloa District of the Eastern Province, which covers an area of 25 Grama Niladari Divisions. Task for the consultancy included: detailed surveys and mapping of entire area, covered by the project, mapping of existing structures and systems related to storm water discharge, hydrological analysis and prepare master plan with proposed improvements to existing system and structues.
